|First place for Tarantella in Veritas Pentala Race. Xilia was second and FinnFUN third.
Tarantella first at Knaperskär mark before FinnFUN, Xilia and X2
Pentala Race was sailed for the 29th time. The track makes two rounds around island Kytö with finishing line at Pentala. The distance is about 21 nm. 11 boats started in class ORC3, which is more than normal. In GPH we now were among the smaller boats.
We took an excellent, but unusual start this time coming to the leward mark on port tack. FinnFUN was coming on starboarb, but slightly too early to the same mark and had to make a 270 degree turn. The wind was 4 - 6 knots, which normally is disastrous to Tarantella. As we had tacked to starboard to round the mark, FinnFun had to yield for us........

Xilia rounded the mark first followed by Merinna, Nauti n' Nolla, Ebnegea and X2. We came soon after. The wind went further down to less than 3 knots.
We realized that there seemed to be more wind closer to Kytö, and tried to get there as fast as possible. We used the optimum gybe angle given in our ORC-certificate. All others ahead of us had taken a straighter route to Knaperskär or gybed to port. At some point it looked somewhat dissapointing, at least compared to FinnFUN who had sailed well and bypassed all others, but we got the wind and succeeded in bypassing everybody and rounded first at Knaperskär. Second was FinnFUN and third Xilia. Miss Piggy did take almost the same route, but her speed was much less, probably because of fouled bottom, as Juha Riikonen tells in his blog.
Half way towards Örskär we had a light reach in 6 knots NW wind, but south of Kytö the wind fainted away, and the others started to approach us. But we got first a new 9 – 10 knots wind fron SW and had full beating towards the mark. On a wind shift we tacked to west, which was a mistake as the wind soon shifted slightly to south. When we met Xilia next time she had passed us. At Örskär Xilia rounded 1 min 35 sec ahead. FinnFUN rounded third 1,5 minutes behind us. On the reaching and running legs FinnFUN approached us slowly, however a little less than the handicap, and bypassed us at the rounding of the buoy at Vargen. Xilia was here 3 min 15 sec before us. The second round was then sailed in good winds of 12 – 14 knots with temporary gusts up to 16 knots.
We crossed the finishing line 6,5 minutes behind Xilia and 3 minutes behind FinnFUN. In corrected time we took the first place with a margin of 4 minutes to Xilia and 7 minutes to FinnFUN.
It was a nice race, and we feel that Tarantella moves smoothly in the water. This is certainly thanks to our crew member Stenka, who recently has polished her bottom.
We have now proceeded to third place in the ProSailor ranking , despite of only 4 races so far.
