Victorious crew
Tarantella took her first Swan Regatta-victory with flying colors in Turku last week with a magnificent 1-2-1 run in the series of three races. A clean 1-1-1 was very close as we lost the second day by only 16 seconds to the Blomster brother's Ron Holland designed Swan 39R Antama. This also meant that we, besides a class victory also took the whole regatta with a 3% margin to the Swan 44 Mk2 Moriju. Our goal was set at winning them all and that is exactly what we did!

The Nautor's Swan Anniversary Regatta was a huge success for all parties and to our best knowledge the third largest Swan Regatta ever with a total of 78 Swans participating (this includes the first and last Swan built - Tarantella I 36/001 and Zingala 82/103). See photo in our gallery.

The regatta got off to a marvelous start with welcoming party for all of 700-800 participants, 78 beatiful Swans lined up alongside the river banks and an estimated 100'000 people admiring the yachts along the river Aura.

The first IBS-racing day started off with light and variable winds, which proved to be rather tricky for the heavy Swans. Tarantella took a lousy start and we could only marvel how our dearest competitor Antama sailed away with good speed towards the windward mark. On the downwind leg towards Orhisaari we finally got Tarantella going and by the time we rounded this southermost mark, we could barely make out our competitors on the horizon behind us... After Orhisaari the wind started to pick up and we reached nicely towards the next mark. As the shore activities where to start at a decent hour, the course was shortened. As we crossed the new finish-line at Kivikari no other Swans where even close (including all the Big ones!) and we got Line Honors by a margin of roughly 10 minutes! Class victory for the day was a fact. Results.

Second Aker Yards-racing day was also a day of light winds and eventhough we where awarded the Line Honors as we finished third in our class, Antama beat us by 16 seconds in the results... The race was also (according to himself) our Senior Skipper Heinz' last race. He said at the last Gala dinner, that he he will now retire after 40 years of Swan-racing. Standing ovations where no surprise and the rest of the crew of Tarantella thank Heinz for all the marvelous work he has done through the years. After all, as Pekka Koskenkylä explained several times during the regatta, without Heinz' decision of buying the first Swan (Tarantella I) there might have never been a Nautor to begin with. Results.

Third and last Annivesary-racing day was more or less the same as the first one regarding the wind conditions. But, as the course was laid out in between all the islands, very local huffs and puffs could be used to gain the advantage and Tarantella finished as 5th yacht in elapsed time. A class victory on corrected time for the day and a Over All regatta victory with only 4 points (series of 1-2-1) was more or less what we had planned for! Full results to be found here.
