Syysseilaus 13.9. - fifth place only for Tarantella

Syysseilaus was sailed in rather weak and shifting winds on 13.9 outside Espoo. The competition was good with 15 boats in class ORC3 on the starting line.
First a W/L race of 6 nm and after that an inshore race of 16 nm were sailed. In the W/L race the wind was average 8 knots, with temporary lows of 4 - 5 knots. There was old swell as well. This was not good for Tarantella, and we finished 5:th in the W/L race with 3 sec. lost to Nautin Nolla, who finished fourth. Astraia was overwhelmingly fast in the light winds, and finished first.

In the inshore race we took a lousy start, and fell behind already in the beginning. As the wind slightly strenghtened, our position improved on the long beating leg, and we finished fourth, just 3 sec. after Ebnegea in corrected time. Astraia was again outstanding, and finished first with a good margin. Merinna had bad luck as they missed the rounding mark at Rysäkari, and had to return back. They lost close to 10 minutes on this.

Our total score was fifth. The winner was naturally Astraia, who also wins the ranking. Second was Ebnegea, who alltogether did a good race. Third was Alexia and fourth Merinna.

We will though take the second place in the ranking.To win the ranking, we should have been no more than one place worse than Astraia.

Victory in Henri Lloyd Race 5.9

Tarantella continues her strong performance, and took a clear victory in Henri Lloyd Race on 5.9.2009. Second was Merinna and third Astraia. There were 16 competitors in class ORC3, which is a record in this race. We were the fourth smallest in our class in handicap.

The course of 30,3 nm started with a beating leg out to Helsinki Lighthouse in southern winds of 7 - 12 knots. The wind was expected to turn gradually to east, therefore it would be beneficial to stay longer on the starboard tack. However, the wind shifted back and forth. Closer to the end of the leg, when staying on the port tack we found that the wind apparently was increasing to the west, and we took a longer tack westward. When we met our competitors again, we found we had taken a "kenguru jump" and had bypassed FinnFun and several other of our bigger competitors. We rounded Helsinki lighthouse just a minute behind Astraia and Alexia. FinnFun rounded fourth a minute behind us.

First place in Aktia Pentala Race 15.8

We took our second victory this year in Aktia Pentala Race. The competition was tough with 9 boats in class ORC 3. The race merely lacked beating, long distances were sailed reaching. On the second reach half way from Örskär to Knaperskär we succeeded in lifting the spinnaker as the wind slightly shifted to west and weakened, by this we gained at least one minute. Only Ebnegea succeeded in doing the same for a short while. This was important, as the margin to FinnFun constantly was growing wery close to the handicap.

The wind was perfect for us with gusts up to the maximum for our Genua 1.

In corrected time we won with a margin of 2 minutes. Tom Finell with FinnFun was second and Phoenix third. We were also the over all winner.

We are now the leader in the ranking.

Baltic Offshore Week, Hanko 27 - 30.7

First day - DSQ in Long Offshore Race

Tarantella sailed excellent in the Long Offshoer Race, and was first in class ORCi 3 with a margin of 20 minutes, but in a jury trial we got a DSQ afrer Ebnegea had left a protest against our rounding of the first windward mark. According to Ebnegea we broke the starboard rule as we approached the mark on port tack as they were on starboard. As we were not in full agreement of the breach, we did not lift the yellow flag. Doing this had given us a scoring penalty of 3 positions. Now we got a DSQ, which was felt as a very strong punishment.

During the following days we wittnessed two similar incidents, but here the disturbed boat did not make any protest.

Winner of the offshore race was therefore Dat Wor Et, with FinnFun as second and Merinna as third.

Second day - two W/L-races and Coastal Race

 Our strong go continued also the second day with a 3:rd and 1:st place in the W/L races and a 1:st place in the Coastal Race. The wind was good and rather steady with strengths of 8 - 16 knots.

Third day - two W/L-races

The wind was weak, 5 - 8 knots, which starts to be difficult for us. Still, our result was reasonably good, with 4:th and 5:th places. We were amazed about Astraia's excellent performance in the light wind.

We finished as 5:th in the regatta among 11 competitors in our class.

Winner was Dat vor et, with Astraia second and Merinna third. Our dear competitor FinnFun finished 6:th. Without the DSQ in the Long Offshore Race, we had been the winner.

First place in Volvo Suursaari Race 5-7.6

Tarantella took a first place in the Volvo Suursaari Race on 5-7.6. We were the most overwhelming winner in ORC-classes. We got the line honours in class 3 being the fourth smallest in GPH among 17 boats.

This was our fourth victory in a row, and the sixth in 8 years.

WB Sails Round the Buoys 31.5

Our first race this year was the WB-Race with three windward/leeward (W/L) races outside Helsinki on 31.5.

Tarantella was not very succesful in the timewise very weak winds, and we finished 6:th among 11 boats. 

In the first race when the winds still were 7 - 7 knots, we could feel, that Tarantella performes well with the new mainsail in 4-D design by WB Sails.

Season 2009
The highlite of our coming season is definitely the ORCi European Championships in Ystad in August. As always, victory is our only goal!

Other good races will be the already legendary Espoo-Suursaari Race, which we have won a few times, the ProSailor Offshore Ranking -series and naturally the Baltic Offshore Week in Hanko, officially called the "Keisari BOW" after the main sponsor Nokian Panimo . For our part the BOW will unfortunately not be the Finnish Champs due to too few (under 10) participants last year, so whatever the result is, we are still the reigning Finnish champs in our class! More of our races on this page later.

New for the season is mainly our mainsail. We are also planning on upgrading our plotter to one with colour display.

Olin J. Stephens II in Memoriam

Olin J. Stephens II at the helm of Tarantella II, May 2005
As many of you already know, our yacht designer Olin J. Stephens II has sailed away on his final voayge at the respectful age of 100+. Mr Stephens, who was maybe the most prominent designer of his time, the first to separate the rudder from the keel and also one of the most important parts of the success of Nautor and its Swans, passed away 13th of September, exactly 5 months after his 100th birthday.

We regretfully aknowledge the fact and offer our most sincere condoleances to his family and loved ones. His memory will live on for a long time in all the sturdy and beatiful S&S-yachts.

Note also that Mr Stephens attended the annual S&S General Meeting in May 2005 in Helsinki, when he was seen at the helm of Tarantella.

 
First place in Syysseilaus and winner of ProSailor Offshore Ranking

Our final race this year was Syysseilaus on Sunday 14.9. The fight was tough, as 13 boats had signed up in class ORCi3. Tough were also the conditions, with up to 18kn of true wind, which is a bit too much for our G1 (that we managed to damage in one tack as it was perforated by one of the spreaders, see gallery). The wind shifted a lot and also changed in strength, at times hitting down to 10kn true. We opted to go with the G1 as the smaller G2 would have been too small in the shifting wind and quite big seas.

We took the first place with the smallest possible margin. Xilia was the winner in the W/L race with Tarantella second and we were first in the coastal race with Xilia second. We finished with equal points, but the rules say that the better one in the last race is the winner. Thus we also win the ProSailor Ranking.
